Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in building materials and other products due to its heat resistant and insulating properties. Asbestos is comprised of microscopic bundles of fibers that may become airborne when materials are damaged or disturbed. In buildings, asbestos fibers can be found in a variety of building products and materials including:
- Fireproofing
- Steam Pipes & Insulation
- Boilers
- Roof Shingles
- Soundproofing
- Joint Compound
- Vinyl floor tiles and mastic
Asbestos Containing Materials (ACM) may be encountered during repairs, renovations, or demolition activities. Asbestos abatement in Virginia is strictly regulated by the EPA, Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) and Virginia Occupational Safety and Health (VOSH). These agencies regulate the processes used to remove asbestos, the protective equipment that must be used and worn, clearance sampling to be completed upon completion of abatement, and the transportation and disposal of the ACM.
OCW maintains a Class A Contractors License and our certified and licensed professionals can provide abatement cost estimates for jobs ranging from home renovations up to large building demolition.
